CSC 421 Applied Algorithms and Structures
Summary
This course covers techniques for designing
and analyzing algorithms. Fundamental topics such as
running-time analysis and efficiency, basic complexity classes and assumptions, and problem-solving techniques (divide-and-conquer, greedy methods, dynamic programming, etc.) will be covered. Examples from various areas, including computational geometry and bioinformatics, will be discussed.

Grading
Homework Assignments --- 30%
Assignments are due on the specified due date and time. Late submissions are not accepted.
Midterm Exam --- 30%
The midterm exam is on Tuesday, October 10th, from 5:45-7:45 PM. No make-up exams will be given. The exam is open book. Electronic devices and internet access are not allowed.
Final Exam --- 40%
The final exam is on Tuesday, November 21st, from 5:45-8:15 PM. The final is cumulative. No make-up exams will be given. The exam is open book. Electronic devices and internet access are not allowed.

Topics
Review: growth of functions and recurrences, analysis of the running time of algorithms (chapters 1, 2, 3, 4).
Efficiency, basic complexity classes, and underlying assumptions (chapter 34 and supplementary material).
Divide and conquer (examples from chapters 2, 4, 7, 33).
Dynamic programming (chapter 15 and supplementary material).
Greedy algorithms (chapters 16, 23, 24).
Problem modelling and reductions (selection from chapter 26).

separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation.
