In HCI 472, we will focus on the visual design in digital artifacts. Evaluate, critique and create digital artifacts (design system and pattern library) organized by design principles. Choose color, type, layout and imagery towards the creation of aesthetic and usable, responsive and accessible digital artifacts. Introduction to accessibility, information visualization and animation.

Learning Objectives

  • Effectively apply and make choices about color, type, layout and imagery to create aesthetic and usable digital interfaces.
  • Demonstrate how to effectively choose optimal means to encode data for information visualization.
  • Articulate and demonstrate an understanding of the principles of animation.
  • Show proficiency in the creation of accessible interactive digital responsive artifacts (design system and pattern library) using component libraries.

  • Rent or buy the Helvetica documentary
  • You will need a way to post web-based assignements so you will need to pay for a URL and a web-hosting service (if you do not already). There are  many options available. You will also need access to an FTP and text editing software. I have found that Cyberduck works well for FTP and there are many, many good text editors. I use Sublime Text - but it is not the top one by most accounts.
  • Access to Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Supplemental instruction at LYNDA.COM is required.

Suggested Sketching/Drawing supplies (you will need at least pencils and paper)

  • Pencil Sharpener
  • 30 - 60 Triangle (at least 12") or an adjustable 45
  • Tracing paper in a roll - at least 18"
  • Drafting Dots or other similar tape
  • Scanner

Online Course Evaluations

Evaluations are a way for students to provide valuable feedback regarding their instructor and the course. Detailed feedback will enable the instructor to continuously tailor teaching methods and course content to meet the learning goals of the course and the academic needs of the students. They are a requirement of the course and are key to continue to provide you with the highest quality of teaching. The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
