HCD 590 Advanced Topics in Human Centered Design

Summary
product, platform and services design requires human-centered designers to understand this growing technology field. As such, Machine Learning Experience Design has become an emerging discipline. This course offers designers and others the tools needed to confidently integrate human-centered design processes and methods including ethnography, prototyping, validation and testing with machine learning for product design.
Through a combination of lecture, readings, case study examples and guest lectures from machine learning experience design professionals, students will learn how to understand and use data in design and research, responsibly incorporate machine learning techniques into their designed experiences and new methods of user research that helps to make better and more responsible AI products.
Students will apply their knowledge by using the design-thinking process to redesign an analog product using ML/AI. Assignments will include problem framing, articulating project goals, designing and conducting interviews, and thematic analysis, conceptualizing designs and presenting product designs.

Evaluations are a way for students to provide valuable feedback regarding their instructor and the course. Detailed feedback will enable the instructor to continuously tailor teaching methods and course
content to meet the learning goals of the course and the academic needs of the students. They are a requirement of the course and are key to continue to provide you with the highest quality of teaching. The
evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely
separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation.
