Summary of autumn 2023-2024 degree requirement updates for graduate programs in the School of Computing
This page is intended to highlight the most significant changes to MS programs in the School of Computing for academic year 2023-2024. All programs listed here include a reduced number of credit hours from 52 to 48 credits beyond any Introductory Courses that may be required for the program.
These new requirements are officially in place for all students admitted or readmitted to one of the programs for summer 2022-2023 or autumn 2023-2024.
Students admitted PRIOR to summer 2022-2023 will retain the program requirements in place for the term in which they were admitted unless they take action to update their program requirements.

International Students: Please note that updating to the autumn 2023-2024 requirements for your program may mean that you are opting out of your remaining Curricular Practical Training (CPT) hours. CPT hours must apply directly in your degree program. If this update will result in completion of your academic program before or during autumn 2023-2024, please discuss with your ISS advisor prior to selecting.
Following are the requirement updates by program, effective autumn 2023-2024:
MS Artificial Intelligence
- Required courses reduced from 9 courses to 8 courses
- CSC 481 removed from Required Courses (added as an option in Major Electives)
MS Business Information Technology
- Open Electives reduced from 8 credit hours to 4 credit hours
MS Computer Science
- Major Electives: “16 additional credit hours” reduced to “12 additional credit hours”
MS Data Science
ALL concentrations
- DSC 424 removed from Foundation Course requirements
- Foundation Courses required analytics course updated to include choice of DSC 424 or DSC 465
MS Game Programming
- Major Electives reduced from 12 credit hours to 8 credit hours
MS Health Informatics
- Major Electives reduced from 24 credit hours to 20 credit hours
MS Human-Computer Interaction
- Open Elective credit hours reduced from 4 credits hours to 0 credit hours
MS Information Systems
- Major Electives reduced from 20 credit hours to 16 credit hours
MS Network Engineering and Security
- CSEC 418 added to Introductory Course requirements
- CSEC 440 added to Foundation Course requirements
- CSEC 450 added to Foundation Course requirements
- NET 464 removed from Foundation Course requirements
- NET 511 removed from Foundation Course requirements
- Major Electives reduced from 12 credit hours to 8 credit hours
- Capstone revised to be NET 594 or CSEC 594
MS Software Engineering
Entrepreneurship and Technology Leadership
- SE 450 Foundation Course requirement updated to be “SE 450 or SE 456”
- Open Elective requirement reduced from 4 credit hours to 0 credit hours
Real-time Game Systems
- SE 433 removed from Foundation Course requirements
- Major Elective requirements increased from 4 credit hours to 8 credit hours, including SE 433 as a Major Elective option
- Open Elective requirements reduced from 4 credit hours to 0 credit hours
Software Architecture
- SE 450 Foundation Course requirement updated to be “SE 450 or SE 456”
- Open Elective requirements reduced from 4 credit hours to 0 credit hours
Software Development
- SE 450 Foundation Course requirement updated to be “SE 450 or SE 456”
- Open Elective requirements reduced from 4 credit hours to 0 credit hours
