CDM Advising

Advising in the Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media

Advising Resource Center

Academic advisors can assist you with progression toward degree completion, navigating university technology and resources, course selection and registration issues, and many other things. We encourage students to meet with their academic advisors regularly as they move through their program.

The Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media provides both academic and faculty advisors to help students successfully complete their degree requirements and prepare for their careers and graduate study.

Both types of advisors can address questions about major/minor and graduation requirements. However, you can think of the difference between these advisors as a difference in perspective and scope.

  • Academic Advisors
    • Offer a broader perspective.
    • Have expertise in how to successfully fulfill major/minor and graduation requirements and navigate the degree process; can help build an optimized schedule each term.
    • Possess in-depth knowledge about college and university policies and procedures, your degree progress report (DPR) and transcripts, and the wide range of resources and extra- and co-curricular experiences available to students.
    • Make changes to your record that are approved by deans and faculty advisors.
    • Sign forms for financial aid, international students and transfer students.
  • Faculty Advisors
    • Are experts in your major field.
    • Assist with long-term planning of your academic program. They know the wide variety of careers available to majors, which particular courses will be best for you, and how to most effectively choose and prepare for specific graduate programs and careers.
    • Can help you evaluate how well your skills and abilities fit with the field and your goals. In addition, they have extensive contacts in the field and can foster your professional development in your academic area of interests.
    • Approve necessary overrides and changes that occur within your chosen major.

Scheduled appointments are strongly encouraged and may be set in OneDePaul, accessible via Campus Connect. Although we will offer in-person appointments, we also encourage students to select an online meeting. We are unable to offer walk-in appointments.

FAQ

FAQ

Advising Resource Center

How do I search and enroll in classes?

The "How to Register for Classes" video will guide you through how to search and enroll, see your registration appointment, and confirm your enrollment.

Which classes do I pick next?

Your Degree Progress Report (DPR) outlines which courses you have completed, are currently enrolled in, or still need to complete. For a more in depth understanding of a DPR, please watch the Undergraduate Degree Progress Report video, if you are an undergraduate student. Please consult with your faculty advisor for course recommendations. If you plan to take a course that is not listed on your DPR, please consult with your academic advisor first.

Should I join a waitlist?

Waitlists can be tricky, so make sure you watch this Waitlist & Swap video before joining one.

Joining a waitlist requires that you wait for someone else to drop the course in order for a seat to open up. There is no guarantee that this will happen. First year students have plenty of options for open classes. If you really want a waitlisted course, it is best to use the SWAP feature before you join. Schedule all open classes and then set up to be swapped into the course you want, if a seat becomes available.

How can I meet an advisor?

Every undergraduate CDM student has two advisors, your faculty and your academic advisor. Graduate CDM students should consult with their faculty advisor. Advising appointments may be scheduled in OneDePaul. To access OneDePaul, click on the OneDePaul Student Support link from the student home page in Campus Connect. If there is no availability listed, please send them an email. If you do not have an advisor, contact cdmadvising@depaul.edu.

Why can't I add a class?

First, consult the academic calendar. If the add deadline has passed, it may be too late to add a course. Speak to an academic advisor to see your options. If it is not past the deadline, check your "Tasks" on Campus Connect to see if you have any holds preventing registration. Follow the instructions on the hold. If you are still unsure, please contact an academic advisor.

Can I drop my classes?

It depends on how far you are into the quarter. Consult the academic calendar for drop deadlines. Be sure to talk to Financial Aid/Student Accounts about how this may affect your funding. Watch the in-depth explanation on deadlines and dropping classes video.

How do I transfer credit?

If you are an incoming first year or transfer undergraduate student, please watch the transferring credits as an incoming student video .

Undergraduate students may take courses at another college/university with approval from an academic advisor provided they are NOT yet bound by the University Residency Requirement. Read the undergraduate residency policy.

Graduate transfer credit is not widely accepted. However, in certain circumstances and with the approval of the student's faculty advisor it will be considered. A maximum of 2 courses may be transferred from another graduate program at the graduate level. Read the transfer credit policy.

I am missing completed transfer credits on my DPR. What do I do?

Make sure that you have sent in any relevant transcripts, AP scores, IB scores, etc. Contact TrAC@depaul.edu to articulate your credits.

Why aren’t my classes on D2L yet?

Faculty have up until the week of classes to open their online portals. Just keep checking back. Also, feel free to reach out to the instructor for clarification. Email addresses are in the directory shortcut.

Can a course be taken as pass/fail?

Yes. However, students should be aware of the pass/fail policy that pertains to their situation and understand that there may be multiple policies and multiple deadlines for those policies. Speaking with an academic advisor prior to selecting any pass/fail option is always advised.
