Trimodal Flex Classes
Starting with the Autumn quarter of AY 2024-25, the School of Computing is gradually transitioning to offer a substantial portion of its graduate classes and some upper-level undergraduate classes in the Trimodal Flex modality. The Trimodal Flex modality allows students to attend each class meeting in person, synchronously via Zoom, or asynchronously, and to change their mode of attendance at any time throughout the quarter. The Trimodal Flex modality offers students more flexibility and options to attend class meetings.
A few things to know about the Trimodal Flex classes
- There will be no separate online async sections for classes offered in trimodal flex. Students looking for online async sections should consider the trimodal flex sections, and opt to attend the class asynchronously. (see notes about international students below).
-
A trimodal flex class does NOT satisfy the F-1/J-1 visa requirement for on-campus classes for international students. International students on F-1/J-1 visas must be enrolled full-time (8 credit hours = 2 classes) and take one in-person class each quarter. Each trimodal flex class has an in-person section for international students.
- If a proctored exam is required by the instructor, students will have the same options as they would in an online asynchronous section, i.e., they may take the exam in class (if space permits) or arrange for a proctored exam within the instructor's specified exam period. .
- The current registration system does not allow students to enroll in a trimodal flex section if there is a time conflict with another course they are enrolled in. If a student would like to enroll in the trimodal flex section with the time conflict, they should contact the CDM advising staff requesting to override the restriction. They should email
cdmadvising@cdm.depaul.edu with their name, DePaul ID number, and the specific course and trimodal flex section number they want to register for. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that there are no conflicts between the scheduled final exams for the courses in which they register.
- Trimodal flex classes are considered online classes with respect to the immunization exemption requirements. Students enrolled only in trimodal flex and/or online classes are eligible for the
Distance Learning Exemption for that quarter. This exemption expires at the end of each term and is reapplied as long as the student maintains online-only status.
