In his work as a product designer, Ross has worked in a leadership capacity and hands-on in the development of a diverse range of products including hand & power tools, medical systems, juvenile products, electronics, and kitchen/bath fixtures. Ross has authored/co-authored 33 Utility and Design patents across many categories including vehicle instrumentation, grip ergonomics, child safety, and linear & rotational motion drive mechanisms.
As an educator with over two decades in the classroom, Ross is enthusiastically dedicated to teaching. Drawing from his comprehensive industry experience, he encourages creativity and underscores the diligence necessary to meet professional expectations. For students who have taken his classes, the experience has contributed to attaining internships, graduate school, and design positions at NASA, Osmo, SharkNinja, McKinsey & Co, Amazon, ACCD, Harvard, and RISD.
Prior to transitioning to consumer product development, Ross focused on jewelry design, where he had the opportunity to work closely with the Vatican and the Smithsonian while researching and developing collections for both institutions. Before moving to Chicago, Ross lived in New York where he created unique pieces and collections for leading jewelry firms including Harry Winston, Mikimoto, Gemveto (Gemlok), and Gori & Zucchi (UNOARRE).
Ross received his BFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and MDes from the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. Recent professional experience includes Director, Industrial Design for DieHard/Craftsman Tools, and Director, Ross Carl Design. Prior to DePaul, Ross taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Parsons School of Design, NYC.
